Telling Your Children about the Divorce
For most people, a family is the most important thing in their lives, and losing it can be a devastating situation. If you and your spouse have children, explaining a divorce to your kids can be hard to do. There are many different approaches that you can take to tell your children about the divorce.
When you sit down to tell your children about divorce, you should make sure that both parents are present to talk about the issues. When you tell them that you are getting a divorce, clearly explain what it will entail.
Your children will probably be upset, but you and your spouse need to stay as calm as possible. Eventually, your kids will calm down, and you can talk about some of the bigger issues. You should also take time to explain why you are getting a divorce, but be sure not to go into an extensive amount of detail.
The next step that you should take is to explain what will change after the divorce. You should explain to your children all of the different aspects of their life that will change. Telling your children more solid information about what will happen next will help them to feel secure during the upcoming events. The next thing you should do, as a family, is answer their questions. Your children will have many questions once they have heard your news. You need to try to answer as many of their questions as possible, because it will help them feel like they aren’t losing all of their family.
